The skinny Friend Who Eats Junk...

We all have one of these right?

Well no we don't. Every study i have ever come across, and every meta study (a study reviewing all previous studies on a subject) show that the skinny friend who eats as much as they like are just the same as everyone else.

It is simply our perception that they either eat alot and or dont do alot of activity to burn off what they eat.

They dont eat that much
Sure they eat crap, macdonalds every day etc but most people who eat junk food do not snack as much as others.

They are very active
They move, work in manual jobs or do alot of little things through out the day, cleaning, walking the dogs looking after relatives etc

They all gain weight easily
When they break a leg, they gain weight as theyre no longer active. When they increase what tey eat they gain weight

All studies demonstrate this.  Ive also lost track of how many documentaries ive watched where they get skinny friend and fat friend and when tested the fatter one always consumes more calories overall and does less activity over all. Or they take a bunch of skinny people and make them eat more food than normal. The result they gain the same amount of fat you would expect anyone to gain who ate 25% more than normal (for example)

So although it may appear they can eat what they like the simply fact is 99% of people have no idea how much they eat. The average person under estimates what they eat by 50-100% If a client tells me they eat 1500kcals a day, i know its more like 2,250kcals. When we sit down and add every single little spice, herb, sauce, oil, mint sweet etc it turn out that they do eat 2250kcals not 1500. If we dont know how many calories we consume, how can we compare ourselves to someone else....?

So next time you see a skinny friend eating rubbish... remember they arent lucky!!!!                Technically they are lucky. Not because they can eat what they want but because they have the balance right. Thats lucky, because its probably thanks to their parents and not themselves. they eat the right amount of food for what they do, even though most have no idea and will say "i just eat what i like"
